Both times I went to Tenerife were for Christmas. Christmas in the sun was just what the doctor ordered! If there is one thing Tenerife has, its good weather all year round. Weather for December was just right at around 25oC on average. I stayed in Playa de las Americas in the south of the Island on both occasions and it really does have something for everyone as well as offering lots of bars and restaurants throughout the resort. Oh yes, bars = cocktails! Ahhh!! For someone who is not much of a drinker I LOVE cocktails! I had just a bit too much sangria (is that a cocktail or not?!) on Christmas day in 2001 though; I ended up dancing with a clown. Yes, a clown! *hides* I didn’t do anything embarrassing in 2007 thankfully, but Rob and I got rather addicted to the strawberry daiquiri: it was lush! It’s a good thing we can’t find that in the UK otherwise we would be alcoholics by now!
I wouldn’t recommend Playa de las Americas if you want the scenery (I think the North is better for this). Las Americas is rather lively and not really ideal for those looking for a quiet getaway. I’m not sure whether it’s rowdy enough to disrupt your sleep though – can hardly comment on that can I?!
When I went for Christmas 2001 I went with my parents, brother and grandparents. This was one of the best holidays I had ever had but one thing was missing – my other half. L We had only got together earlier that year and the holiday was booked around the time we got together. Having Rob there for Christmas 2007 was perfect.
One thing Tenerife is famous for is Mount Teide but I never went there, which is quite unusual for me. The first time I was in Tenerife, my Dad went with my brother and grandfather. The coach was picking them up at 7am in the morning. There was absolutely no way I was waking up early just to go up a mountain. I had a different attitude the second time I went though, but it never happened as Rob, Dad and Oliver had already been before.
One thing I found really really irritating in Tenerife were the street sellers selling all sorts of rubbish. You would get a different one approaching you every few minutes and they even came up to you when you were sitting outside *trying* to enjoy a quiet drink/meal in a pub/restaurant. You’re on holiday and the last thing you want is to be hassled by these annoying buggers. They were often very persistent and very reluctant to take no for an answer. I wonder how often people buy something from them: I only saw people trying to push them away. What the heck were the police doing about these people? There’s probably no law for that sort of thing
We went on several trips in 2001 but did not go on so many the second time round as we had already been there, done that, got the t-shirt. Even though we had a great holiday in 2007, I can’t help feeling 2001 was a bit better. I’m not a big fan of going to the same place twice, unless you know there are more things to do that you hadn’t got round to doing before.
